Matter
Role: Systems Design
I was brought on as one of two designers in the early design process for the game “Matter”, the unreleased flagship title of Blind Wink Games. Blind Wink Games was a venture by film director Gore Verbinski, famous for the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. The game was planned as an early release for the Microsoft Kinect that featured a novel gesture control system, beautiful concept art by Syd Mead, a narrative by Gore Verbinski, and a lot of potential.
I was brought on to invent and explore the potential of novel core mechanics for their gameplay, which was a bit rudderless at the time. I drafted a narrative design document that used an approach focused on interactive vignettes, similar to what we now see in games like Telltale Games’ Walking Dead series, as a method for keeping a cinematic approach to gameplay, and paired this with puzzle gameplay focusing on reflected image based mechanics similar to the anamorphic puzzles seen in “Superliminal”.
