SPACE HULK

Dice Cup & Token Holder

CAD Design - Additive Manufacturing - Finish Painting

Developed as a personal project of mine to accompany the tabletop game Space Hulk, these two pieces were built to be high-end, bespoke accessories for use with the game. The first of these is a dice cup designed in the theme of the Blood Angels space marines and used by that player to make their attack rolls. This dice cup prominently features a 3D relief of the Blood Angels winged crest, and blood drop gemstones. The second is a blip token holder for the Tyranid Genestealers that are used by that player to determine how many of their units spawn each turn. This blip token holder features an industrial fan grate being torn apart by a Tyranid claw.

This was an incredible passion project for me to work on pouring a large number of hours into perfecting the look of these pieces. Some of the more industrial components of the model were generated using OpenSCAD for mathematical precision, and the more organic parts of the design were built in Autodesk Maya through typical box modeling techniques. After being developed in OpenSCAD the industrial fan grate on the Tyranid Blip Token Holder was bent and twisted using envelope deformation. The Blip Token Holder also features internal geometry with visible fan blades that could only really be fabricated cleanly through 3D printing techniques. All triangulated geometry was also meticulously built to the needed water-tight and manifold geometry specifications needed for 3D printing.

Following the modeling process, these accessories were printed on our 30 micron precision plastic printer for a beautiful surface finish. They were then hand painted using traditional miniature painting technique, and finished with a clear coat for durability and gloss.
