Eta Carinae Nebula

The History Channel’s show “The Universe: Ancient Mysteries” featured a discussion of the Homunculus Nebula of Eta Carinae in their episode “The Eye of God”. This nebula is notable as the result of a massive near-supernova explosion around 1841 that formed its unique two lobed structure. Details of the 3D shape of this nebula were mapped using slices captured by the Very Large Telescope in Chile, which were then turned into a model for 3D printing at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center.
For this episode of the series I was brought on as a 3D Printing consultant to produce the physical model featured on the show. I was also featured as a guest on the show, discussing the process of 3D printing with their host.
